Did you know that most households in the United States have at least one pet? With National Love Your Pet Day falling on Monday, February 20th here’s how my fur baby Mobil made his way into my heart & home.
It was a hot summer day on August 18th, 2015 and I was in the midst of a restaurant opening for work. The night prior the team wanted me to purchase some items in the morning before coming in and I also had a meeting to attend in Miami Beach.
While driving that morning I heard a faint series of meows. Naturally, my first instinct was to check my phone as this must be some video auto-playing from Instagram/Facebook but the phone was locked. I turn off the radio, pull off from the stoplight and a few minutes later there goes the meowing again. So I drove into a parking lot grabbed a mini flashlight and looked around and under the car/hood. After a few minutes, I couldn’t find anything and the meowing stopped so I’m thinking it either fell out or I’m crazy.
En route to the meeting I hear the meowing again but to avoid being late I wait until I get to my destination. I pop the hood again and a guy comes over offering his help as he thought I was broken down. I explained hearing meows coming from the car but of course as soon as someone else gets involved it stops and I look like this super crazy girl.
Finally while heading to the restaurant I had the idea of going to a car repair/oil change place because they could raise the car. My GPS brings me to the Mobil gas station in Aventura which has the Mobil 1 Lube Express service however they don’t have a lift. After quickly explaining how I heard this cat crying in my car all day I’m pretty sure Stephan, the technician thought I was insane but agreed to help. He began tapping around my front bumper and in my mind, I’m just like this is your last chance you better meow and for the first time all day it did!
He called over the rest of the team and they proceeded to detach part of my bumper to uncover the cutest 6-week old kitten holding on to the radiator cord for dear life (he had been holding on from when I started driving at 9 AM to 12:30 PM). After a few attempts, we successfully pulled him out and got him some food & water. But what was I to do with this kitten? I still needed to go to the restaurant and I knew at the time my mom wouldn’t let me keep him.
After everyone at the gas station posting on Facebook and no luck of finding him a home. I called my boyfriend to tell him about this cute kitten I had been hearing all day. He agreed to keep him until I could convince my mom just a few weeks later (they’ve come a long way!). All in all his name was to pay homage to the gas station & the crew that helped rescue him.
Like a picture perfect movie ending…We lived happily ever after!
xo Sincerely Shanti
